Today in South Africa we celebrate Freedom Day one of our many public holidays.

Freedom Day specifically celebrates freedom and commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994.

This year however it feels a little surreal celebrating something that we have all been stripped of for the foreseeable future.

Thankfully we now have a clear plan for exiting lockdown but it will not be a quick process. Currently we're in what is now known as Level 5 (aka Hard Lockdown) and on the 1st of May we will move to Level 4. So now the country is waiting for the various govt ministers to let us know what we can and can't do in terms of exercise.

My disappointment in this is that civil society hasn't been asked to engage in any meaningful debate as to how the lockdown should be managed over the coming months. It's one thing to celebrate Freedom, it's quite another to be able to exercise that freedom.
