On Wednesday Best Buy Supermarket (which is next door to The Gathering) was robbed at gunpoint by a notorious local gang. The staff lost all their cellphones and other items and the shop lost all its takings. To add insult to injury, one of the shop staff was kidnapped with a ransom demand of R100k. The shop owners managed to get R20k together and their colleague was released safely once they had paid the gang.
This is an awful escalation of the gang violence that has been prevalent in Macassar and the Cape Flats and the local police are woefully under resourced and ill-equipped to deal with this.
