Friday night is fight night - this used to be an exciting refrain to hear as a kid, and even now I find it quite exciting, though one rarely hears it.

At the tender age of just 54 I had my first real life experience of Fight Night as my boxing gym hosted an evening of White Collar (my W post) boxing.

My fight was with Conrad who became a good buddy and went on to be a great help to my son as he went to college to study sound engineering.

Anyway, back to fight night...

We had a great fight and though we were the lowest billed fight on the card that night, we were voted *Fight Of The Night* because we went heavy ad hard and really battered each other. It was a LOT of fun!

Then just over a year later in April '21 we had a rematch which was held at Conrad's Daisy Jones Bar. This time we were the penultimate fight on the card, but I think we were both a bit wary this second time and it wasn't quite the fight everyone had hoped for.

There were a few issues that I've not talked about before too. Mainly, I had prepared for three 3 minute rounds, but at the last minute was told it would be three 2 minute rounds (mainly due to Covid!?!), this might not sound like a big deal, but given I had the superior cardiovascular fitness and had a fight strategy based on this, the shorter rounds significantly changed the nature of the fight. Having said that it was still a lot of fun, though I came away feeling a bit disappointed not just for myself but also for those who had expected something closer to our first fight.

So will I fight again?

Who knows!

Part of me thinks I'm far too old for such nonsense, but a big part of me really enjoys it. I guess in part it would come down to finding an appropriate partner to fight. Recently I sparred with a 20 year old and whilst it was a lot of fun, it's not the cleverest thing to be doing at my age.

If I do fight again, I will change my name from Pastor Punch to Dino The Lumbering Dinosaur, but that's my L post right there.

  1. I well remember Friday Night Fights. My father watched them regularly. Since we only had one small black and white TV back then I was not thrilled with this since I didn't care that much for the fights. But it was funny seeing how excited he would get and how much emotion he put into watching those fights. Life was simpler in so many ways back then.

  2. The best part is that friendship forged in a boxing ring.

  3. That must have felt good to be declared "fight of the night". It's great that you became good friends with Conrad. I hope you will fight again. If you enjoy it, why not?
