It's important to use the correct protective gear when boxing, be it on bag work, sparring or fighting in the ring.

The most obvious piece of protective equipment is the boxer's gloves. These come in various sizes which are dictated by weight. Personally I like to use 16oz gloves, but for white collar boxing match (that will be my W post) gloves are normally 12oz.

Underneath the boxer's gloves there should always be wraps on each hand, these offer a degree of protection to the fingers, thumb and wrists, and both wraps and gloves should be used as a starting point for boxing.

Once one is in to sparring or boxing in the ring with an opponent, headgear is vitally important, especially for amateurs. As far as I'm concerned  they're essential, and at my age I treasure my headgear! However professional boxers don't use them.

An absolutely essential piece of protective gear regardless of your status as a boxer is the mouthguard. These can be bought in most sports shops, but I would argue that buying a mouthguard from a sports shop is a waste of money. Rather, I would suggest looking for a local dentist/dental hygienist who makes mouthguards for local schools. We're blessed to have one locally, and for the price of a top-end sports shop one, we can have bespoke made to measure mouthguards and they only take 48 hours to be ready.

The mouthguard is so important that I would refuse to get in to the boxing ring to spar with anyone if I didn't have my mouthguard in!

With gloves and headgear on in the ring, my wraps are on and mouthguard is in, despite neither being visible.

  5. Protective gear is so important in any sport. My son played hockey. The mouthguard grossed me out as it got older. :)

  6. I'm a big fan of protective gear in any sport. A helmet saved my brain when I had an accident on my bicycle when I was in my mid-20s
