Open Mat is a term probably more closely associated with MMA than boxing but it is used to some extent in the world of boxing gyms.

At Knockout Centre (owned and run by Corné Blom a former MMA fighter) it's used to denote an open session on Saturday mornings, in which boxers can come and do their own workouts as well as spar with other willing members.

For me it's a new idea and one I really like and enjoy, especially the sparring aspect of it (that'll be my S post).

Previously when I had been to a sparring session on a Saturday morning it had been a case of going for a run followed by a couple of rounds of skipping and then straight in to sparring. This was all good stuff, but having the sparring as part of the Open Mat means it becomes more of a complete session.

Open Mat session at a boxing gym can also be an opportunity for newcomers to experience the gym in a less intense atmosphere and give various pieces of equipment a go.

  3. I like the idea of Open Mat. Sounds like a good opportunity to "meet" new people, too.

  4. Our local gymnastics studio offers open gym hours on the weekend for the same reason. What better way than to scout for new talent. Thanks for sharing.

  7. When I hear of an open mat my mind turns to a place where I can lay down to rest. That's what I'd be good at.
