U if for Upside Down

Before I started this year's A to Z Challenge, I did say my theme would be random, so just in case things haven't been random enough so far...

Several nights ago I woke up just after 5am needing to wee, but for a moment or two as I lay on the bed I was a little disoriented because as it turned out, I was upside down on the bed. Apparently I had been that way since at least 1am when Paula got up to wee (oh the joys of being in our 50s!).

I have absolutely no idea how I ended up in that position on the bed or why, but it got me thinking about being upside down.

The first thought I had was remembering the hauntingly beautiful song All We Do by Oh Wonder, an English alt-pop duo. I first heard this song as the theme from a brilliant TV series entitled Unforgotten, and it truly is one of those songs that gets under your skin in a good way. The chorus of the song is what particularly grabbed me: "I've been upside down, I don't wanna be the right way round, Can't find paradise on the ground". I love the non-conformity of those words, they really appeal to me and my south-paw brain.

Have I said it's a beautiful song?

In thinking about being upside down, I also  had a chuckle at the thought that despite being at the bottom of the African continent deep down in the Southern Hemisphere, most South Africans refer to Australia as being "down under" when in reality we're sat further south than most of Australia itself.

But my favourite thought about being upside down is the reality that the Kingdom of God is an upside down kingdom in so far as the things that the world and life considers valuable and worth pursuing are complete rubbish in God's eyes, and when we chase after God and the purposes of the Kingdom we're putting people first, particularly the most vulnerable such as widows, orphans and aliens (immigrants). That's an upside down Kingdom I can live with and in.
