T is for Thankful Thursdays

I know it's Friday today, but sadly April hasn't been too cooperative with its alignment of days and letters.

Ever since we planted The Gathering we have encouraged the church to join in with our Thankful Thursdays in which we focus on giving thanks for all that God has done and is doing in our lives.

The Gathering's weekly Soup Kitchen is one expression of our collective thankfulness as we serve the neediest and most vulnerable in our community, not because we want recognition or reward, but because we want to share some of the blessings God has poured out in our lives.

Yesterday we once again served 70lts of fresh home made Creamy Chicken & Mushroom soup and gave each recipient a peanut sachet and a chocolate egg (we had a few left over from Easter). We also gave each of the adults a one litre pot each to take home.

As has been the case in the last few weeks, the soup was all gone in a little over twenty minutes and was gratefully received by all. We had to laugh as well at how the chocolate eggs attracted some kids we've never seen before at our Soup Kitchen, but that's one of the joys of it, everyone is welcome.

We are so thankful for the provision that has allowed us to run the Soup Kitchen for so many years and especially thankful for being able to keep it going through our lockdown.

  1. My husband and son both volunteer at a local shelter where meals are cooked and served - lunch is open to anyone and dinner is served to those who will sleep there that night. Of course, this was pre-covid. They haven't started back allowing volunteers inside the shelter and I think they have handed out prepared meals in a to-go container for lunches because large numbers still can't gather. I think it will open back to volunteers this summer. Is a sachet of peanuts the same as a small bag of peanuts?
